Throughout the process of project management, project managers face numerous hurdles to delivering their projects on time and within budget. Below, we put together the top 3 challenges that we see project managers facing today.
1. Uncertainty: Every project manager knows uncertainty. Most planning software encourages this behavior, with a rigid approach to setting durations and calculating schedules. Even schedules built on years of experience and best practice cannot always accurately predict the future behavior of a modern project. Unless this uncertainty is properly understood and appropriately managed, this risk will compound over time to give management a false view of the most likely outcome.
2. Communication: The fact that many organisations still struggle to align project and corporate data. For example, how many organisations have figured out their cross-walk between the project work breakdown structure and the business cost breakdown structure? Without these basics in place we are ensuring that something will be lost in translation when communicating the project cost & schedule health.
3. Lack of interoperability: Project managers often face the difficulties of trying to harmonise data across many applications to report health of a single project. Our experts estimate that most project managers are running at least five applications, if not more, in order to have all the functionality that they need. Unfortunately, this means a lack of data integrity and too much focus on redundant data entry instead of corrective actions.
Those are our top three hurdles in project management, but we want to hear from you. What are the biggest obstacles you face in the project management process?
